Teak Outdoor Rocking Chair – Relaxing and comforting - How to take care of it

If you are trying to get the feel of relaxation, peace and tranquility all in one, in your backyard, by the pool, or under the tree in your yard, then a superior, well built teak wood rocking chair is the way to go.

Teak wood is a hard wood and rich in teak oil that makes it one of the best woods available for outdoor furniture construction. A good quality grade A teak wood is intended to last for a lifetime. Over the years teak chairs can start to look old and weathered unless a proper care is taken.

So how do you care for your brand new Teak Wood rocking chair? I am going to discuss a few methods, if adopted will keep your rocker like new, and lasts for years to come.
Teak is derived from tropical hardwood tree. Even though teak wood does not required to be kept away from sun, rain, snow, but leaving teak rocking chair in these conditions will make the chair weathered which causes the surface to get rough and give light grayish tone to it.

Rocking chairs usually have a weaker point which is at the base of the chair where it rocks. This is the spot where maximum weight is applied when you swing to and fro.

Keep a close eye at these spots. “A stitch in time saves nine” proverb goes well here. If some cracks start appearing at these joints, take care of it right way. Small cracks called checking are very normal on teak wood but if they appear to be bigger than where you can insert a quarter, than it is a concern. A simple fix with good outdoor glue can avoid the big problem.

To clean the teak wood the first step would be to take a soapy water cloth and wash it off. Do not hesitate to use water. Rinses it well, and let it dry overnight, then wipe the chair off again with a dry towel. At this point you can apply “Teak protector” which is water based solution that keeps the teak wood look new, or apply teak oil which beautifies the wood and enhances the wood grain, or you can just do nothing and leave it as it is.

When storing the teak rocking chair, make sure you don’t do so in damp area. Dampness will cause the mould to grow.
Also, if you live in a sunny area you may cover the rocking chair with a sheet or chair cover to make sure that the UV rays from the sun do not weather the superior Teak Wood. Another issue facing your Teak Wood rocking chair would have to be the risk of staining the wood with food or drinks. You can use soapy water to wash the chair, as I discussed earlier.
If you wish to use a wood polish to take car of it, note that any oil based polishes tend to enhance the chances of getting mold especially in humid areas.

With above provided methods, you will be able to keep your Teak Rocker chair looking beautiful and brand-new for many years to come.
